Silver Jewelry Care Instructions

Preventing Tarnish on Sterling Silver:

  • The best way to prevent tarnishing is to store clean, dry sterling silver in a dry airtight container, like a ziplock bag.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight. Before you hit the beach or pool, be sure to remove your silver jewelry. Sunlight can cause silver to tarnish as well.
  • Minimize sterling silver's contact to chemicals (hairspray, perfume, body lotion, bleach, etc.) and do not wear it the shower, swimming pool or hot tub.
  • Don’t leave silver jewelry in the bathroom. Humidity can speed up the oxidation process that produces tarnish.
  • Remove during household chores. Substances with additional sulfur like household cleaners, chlorinated water, perspiration, and rubber will accelerate corrosion and tarnish. It's a good idea to remove sterling silver completely before cleaning.
  • Avoid wearing while cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities.
  • Remove your jewelry before going to bed.
  • After taking off your silver jewelry, clean it with a dry soft cloth, or polishing cloth, before putting it back into an airtight container.
  • Wear it often. Your skin's natural oils will help keep silver jewelry shiny. One of the easiest ways to prevent tarnish is to simply wear your silver often as opposed to letting it sit in a jewelry box unworn.

How to Clean Sterling Silver:

  • Use a silver polishing cloth to remove oxidation from silver. Tissues and paper towels can cause scratches.
  • Commercial cleaners can be purchased at jewelry stores. Always remember to read the instructions on the commercial cleaners first before you attempt cleaning. Most commercial cleaners are very strong and will remove all oxidation!
  • We do not recommend using toothpaste or baking soda for cleaning as it may scratch the surface of the silver. Do not use harsh chemicals such as bleach, acetone, etc, to clean your silver because they can make silver more dull, and ruin the surface.
